Australia's Big Blow Before Semifinal: Matthew Short Ruled Out of Champions Trophy, Cooper Connolly Replaces Him
Australia's campaign in the ICC Champions Trophy took a major hit just before their semifinal clash against India. Matthew Short has been ruled out of the tournament due to injury, and in his place, young all-rounder Cooper Connolly has been added to the squad.
The semifinal between India and Australia is scheduled to take place tomorrow, Tuesday, at the Dubai International Stadium. However, the injury to Short means Australia will have to adapt without him in the crucial knockout game.
Cooper Connolly, who has played six matches for Australia so far, including three One-Day Internationals (ODIs), has been called up as a replacement. However, his chances of making it into the playing XI remain slim, as Australia may opt for either Jack Fraser-McGurk or Aaron Hardie for the semifinal.
Matthew Short sustained an injury during Australia’s match against Afghanistan, which has now ruled him out of the Champions Trophy. Australia has been dealing with a series of injuries throughout the tournament, and Short’s absence adds to their woes ahead of the knockout stages.
There were hopes that Short would recover in time for the semifinal, but ultimately, Cricket Australia decided to go with a replacement, bringing in Connolly for the upcoming match.
