Glenn Maxwell Returns to Red-Ball Cricket
Glenn Maxwell is set to return to red-ball cricket, having been included in Victoria's 12-member squad. Victoria will face Queensland on Monday, where Maxwell is expected to play. By participating in this match, he aims to prepare for a potential spot in Australia’s Test tour of Sri Lanka next year.
Maxwell has played only two first-class matches in the past five years, having suffered a serious leg injury two years ago. Since then, he has been irregular in the longer format of the game. The 36-year-old Maxwell will be closely monitored during the first day of the match.
Even if he plays against Queensland, it is unlikely that Maxwell will participate in Victoria's next Sheffield Shield match, which starts on October 20. In that Shield match, Australian Test players like Steven Smith, Nathan Lyon, and Mitchell Stark are expected to play, along with Scott Boland.
Maxwell will play a One Day International against New South Wales on October 25. However, he may miss Victoria's third and fourth Shield rounds due to Australia's ODI and T20 series against Pakistan.
Maxwell has played seven Test matches in the subcontinent, with his last appearance coming in 2017 against Bangladesh. While the conditions in Shield cricket differ from those in Sri Lanka, playing red-ball cricket will aid his physical preparation for the Sri Lanka tour.
