Nasum’s Absence from Playing XI Part of Team Strategy: Salahuddin
Despite being included in Bangladesh’s squad for the ongoing T20I series against the Netherlands in Sylhet, left-arm spinner Nasum Ahmed was left out of the playing XI in the opening match. His omission, despite being in good form, raised questions among fans. However, batting coach Mohammad Salahuddin described the decision as purely strategic.
“There are 16 players in the squad, but only 11 can play. We pick the players who seem most suitable for the conditions on that day. Nasum is doing well, we all know that. But it’s not possible to field everyone in every match,” Salahuddin explained.
The first match was heavily affected by dew, making it difficult for spinners to grip and control the wet ball. Team management, therefore, opted for a line-up better suited to those conditions.
Salahuddin further clarified that Nasum’s exclusion had nothing to do with poor performance. “Just because someone is in the squad doesn’t mean he’ll play every match. Only those whose roles fit into the match strategy will get opportunities. This is normal,” he said.
Nasum has been a consistent presence in Bangladesh’s squads and has delivered steady performances. However, in the series opener, conditions and team requirements meant he had to sit out.
