Rabada, Starc Shine on a Dramatic Day One at the World Test Championship Final
The opening day of the World Test Championship Final 2023–25 at Lord’s turned into a bowler’s paradise, as 14 wickets tumbled in a dramatic start to the much-anticipated clash between Australia and South Africa.
Opting to bowl first under overcast skies, South Africa’s captain Temba Bavuma handed the new ball to Kagiso Rabada, who exploited the conditions masterfully. Rabada claimed 5 wickets for 51 runs, earning his second place on the Lord’s Honours Board. Despite a fighting 61 from Steve Smith and a valuable 48 from debutant Beau Webster, Australia were bowled out for 212.
Just as Smith seemed poised for a century, he fell unexpectedly to part-time off-spinner Aiden Markram, caught in the slips — triggering a lower-order collapse.
South Africa’s reply was even more fragile. Australia’s pace trio — Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, and the returning Josh Hazlewood — struck early. The Proteas slumped to 43/4, still trailing by 169 runs at stumps. Only captain Temba Bavuma stood firm as South Africa ended the day in deep trouble.
The day began under heavy clouds and floodlights, with Australia opening with three maiden overs. What followed was a relentless tug-of-war, with bowlers dictating terms and batters struggling for survival. With the pace of the game so far, this final may well be decided before the scheduled five days are up.
