Wanindu Hasaranga Steps Down as Sri Lanka's T20 Captain
Sri Lanka failed to progress past the group stage in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, returning home empty-handed after losing to Bangladesh. Following this disappointing performance, Wanindu Hasaranga has stepped down as the captain of Sri Lanka's T20 team.
Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) confirmed Hasaranga's decision to relinquish the captaincy through a press release. Hasaranga had been appointed as the T20 captain last year and led the team in 10 matches.
In his resignation letter to SLC, Hasaranga stated that he is stepping down in the best interest of the team but will continue to serve as a player.
Hasaranga said, "Sri Lanka will always get my utmost effort as a player, and I will continue to support my team and leadership."
Sri Lanka Cricket has accepted Hasaranga's decision to step down from the captaincy and expects him to remain a crucial player for the team in international cricket.
