Mahela Jayawardene Returns to His Old Position
Sri Lanka's legendary batter, Mahela Jayawardene, has once again returned to his old position. He has been appointed as the head coach of the IPL franchise Mumbai Indians, replacing Mark Boucher. Jayawardene will take on the role of head coach for Mumbai in the 2025 IPL season.
On Sunday, Mumbai Indians confirmed the news of Jayawardene’s appointment as head coach through a social media post. Previously, from 2017 to 2022, Jayawardene served as Mumbai Indians' head coach, during which time he led the team to three championship victories.
Besides being the head coach of Mumbai, Mahela Jayawardene also held other key roles within the franchise. He served as Mumbai’s 'Global Head of Performance,' overseeing coaching and player selection for Mumbai Indians in the IPL, MI Emirates in the ILT20, MI Cape Town in the SA20, and MI New York in Major League Cricket (MLC).
In 2024, under Mark Boucher's coaching, Mumbai Indians had a disappointing season, winning only 4 out of 14 matches and finishing at the bottom of the points table.
In addition to his work with Mumbai Indians, Mahela Jayawardene has also served as the head coach of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) franchise Khulna Titans.
