Australia Revamp Test Squad for Windies Clash: Smith Injured, Labuschagne Dropped
Australia will head into the first Test against West Indies in Barbados on June 25 with a reshaped batting lineup, as Steve Smith is sidelined by injury and Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped due to poor form.
Youngsters Josh Inglis and Sam Konstas have been named as replacements, as the Test side begins its journey in the new 2027–29 ICC World Test Championship cycle.
Smith, who injured his finger during the WTC final against South Africa at Lord’s, is yet to fully recover. According to chief selector George Bailey, the management is hopeful that the veteran batter could return for the second Test starting July 3 in Grenada.
Meanwhile, Labuschagne’s prolonged run drought has cost him his spot. Despite opening the batting in the WTC final, he failed to impress with scores of 17 and 22. However, he remains in the squad as a backup.
“When Marnus is in form, he's a pivotal player in the side. He’s aware of the expectations and we're continuing to work closely with him,” said Bailey.
Newcomers Ready to Impress
Sam Konstas made headlines with a half-century against Jasprit Bumrah during last year’s Boxing Day Test.
Josh Inglis scored a century on debut against Sri Lanka and has impressed selectors with his composure and technique.
“We’re excited to give both Josh and Sam this opportunity. They’ve had strong starts, and this exposure will help shape their Test careers,” added Bailey.
