Mumbai Indians Seal Playoff Spot, Crush Delhi Capitals by 59 Runs

Mumbai Indians became the fourth and final team to qualify for the IPL 2025 playoffs, crushing Delhi Capitals by 59 runs in a must-win encounter at the Wankhede Stadium. The win knocks Mustafizur Rahman’s Delhi out of the playoff race, ending their campaign in a disappointing fashion.

Surya Steers Mumbai to a Competitive Total

After losing the toss, Mumbai were put in to bat and found themselves in early trouble at 58 for 3 within 7 overs. But Suryakumar Yadav rose to the occasion with a brilliant counter-attacking knock, smashing 73 off 43 balls. He was well supported by Tilak Varma (27) and Naman Dhir (24) as Mumbai recovered to post a challenging total of 180/5 in their 20 overs.

Delhi missed the presence of their regular captain Axar Patel, who was sidelined due to illness. On a slow Wankhede pitch, the absence of a quality spinner like Axar hurt them badly.

Delhi Batting Collapses Under Pressure

Chasing 181, Delhi got off to a disastrous start. Captain Faf du Plessis was dismissed in the second over for just 6 runs by Deepak Chahar, while Trent Boult sent back the previous match’s centurion KL Rahul, dealing a double blow early on.

The rest of the Delhi batting lineup faltered as well, failing to build partnerships. Rahul, Abhishek Porel, and others couldn’t handle the pressure from Mumbai’s disciplined bowling attack. Jasprit Bumrah, Trent Boult, and Deepak Chahar dismantled Delhi's lineup with pace and precision, bundling them out for 121 in 18.2 overs.

Mumbai Dominates, Delhi Eliminated

The 59-run defeat was a crushing blow for Delhi Capitals, who are now eliminated from the tournament. Mumbai, on the other hand, joins Gujarat Titans, Punjab Kings, and Royal Challengers Bangalore in the playoffs.

With this commanding win, Hardik Pandya’s side enters the knockout stage full of momentum, while Delhi’s season ends in heartbreak despite flashes of brilliance, particularly from Mustafizur Rahman in earlier matches.
