Claim That Bangladesh Must Play in India Is False, Says BCB After ICC Communication
Uncertainty has emerged over Bangladesh’s participation in matches scheduled in India during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, which will be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka. Popular cricket website ESPNcricinfo reported that the International Cricket Council (ICC) had allegedly issued an ultimatum to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), stating that Bangladesh must play their matches in India or face potential points deductions.
However, the BCB has categorically denied these claims, calling them false and misleading.
In an official press release, the BCB stated that it had received a response from the ICC regarding the board’s expressed concerns over the safety and security of the Bangladesh national team in India, along with a request to consider hosting the team’s matches at alternative venues.
According to the BCB, the ICC has reiterated its commitment to ensuring the full and uninterrupted participation of the Bangladesh team in the tournament. The ICC also conveyed its willingness to engage in discussions and work closely with the BCB to address the concerns raised and find appropriate solutions.
The ICC further assured the BCB that the board’s views would be taken seriously during the formulation of the tournament’s security plans.
Addressing reports published in sections of the media, the BCB clarified that claims suggesting the board had been given an ultimatum were completely false, baseless, and inconsistent with the actual communication received from the ICC.
“The Bangladesh Cricket Board always places the highest priority on the safety and overall welfare of the Bangladesh national cricket team,” the statement added.
The BCB also confirmed that it will continue professional and cooperative discussions with the ICC and relevant organisers to ensure Bangladesh’s smooth and successful participation in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, with the aim of reaching a practical and mutually acceptable solution.
