Controversial remarks about cricketers: BCB issues show-cause notice to Nazmul Islam

Just as tensions within the cricketing fraternity had yet to subside, a process of accountability has begun from within the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). Following controversial and objectionable remarks directed at cricketers, the BCB has issued a show-cause notice to its director, Nazmul Islam.

In a press release issued on Thursday, the BCB stated that the board’s position regarding Nazmul Islam’s recent comments is clear and that he has been asked to provide a written explanation. At the same time, the board urged cricketers to withdraw from any boycott decision and continue participating in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).

In the statement, the BCB emphasized that players are the core stakeholders and lifeblood of all cricketing activities under the board, including the BPL. The board expressed hope that the cricketers would continue to demonstrate professionalism and commitment by contributing to the successful completion of the tournament and ensuring the smooth continuity of BPL 2026.

It may be noted that while speaking to the media about Bangladesh’s stance on the T20 World Cup, Nazmul Islam said that Bangladesh is eager to take part in the World Cup but expects a suitable environment for participation. During the interaction, when asked whether cricketers would be compensated if Bangladesh does not take part in the World Cup, he made disparaging remarks directed at the players.

Nazmul Islam said, “This question (about compensation) should not even be raised. We spend so much behind them, but what have they achieved at the international level? Have we won any global title? Then we could also say—since you failed to perform, you should now bear the responsibility of the expenses incurred behind you. Pay it back.”

Cricketers’ organization COAB (Bangladesh Cricketers’ Welfare Association) has described his remarks as unacceptable and disrespectful. According to the organization, such statements undermine the dignity of players and create unnecessary divisions within the cricketing community.
