Countrys First Womens BPL to Begin in April
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has officially announced the launch of the country’s first-ever franchise-based women’s Twenty20 tournament, titled the Women’s Bangladesh Premier League (WBPL). The tournament is scheduled to be held from April 3 to 15, 2026.
The BCB views this initiative as a historic step in the professional development of women’s cricket in Bangladesh. Organised under a franchise model, the tournament is expected to play a significant role in enhancing competition, commercial prospects, and international standards in women’s cricket in the country.
The inaugural edition will feature three franchise teams. Alongside leading national team players, emerging talents will also get the opportunity to participate in the tournament. Local players will be selected through a draft system to ensure balance, strength, and depth across the teams.
In addition, franchises will be allowed to sign overseas professional cricketers. The inclusion of international players is expected to raise the competitive standard and global appeal of the tournament.
BCB Director and Chairperson of the Women’s Wing, Rubaba Dowla, will serve as the Chair of the WBPL Governing Council. The council will oversee all organisational matters related to the tournament.
The BCB has stated that further details regarding franchise names, draft regulations, competition format, fixtures, venues, broadcast arrangements, and commercial partnerships will be announced in due course.
