Many may not be familiar with the name Aminul Huq Moni. It's not unusual, as this sports enthusiast worked behind the scenes in cricket.
This talented individual passed his matriculation exams in 1964 and graduated with first-class honors in Physics from the University of Dhaka. He also spent some time teaching at the "Oxford of the East." Professionally, he was the Managing Director of Banglavision.
Before the country's independence, he played second-division cricket for "Bangladesh Boys." In the 1979-1980 season, he played first-division cricket for "National Sporting."
As a player, Moni was also a successful cricket organizer. He served as the joint secretary of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) for three years starting in 1983. From 1991 to 1996, he was the general secretary of the board. He also worked as a board director later. Until his last day, he was an organizer at the prestigious Mohammedan Sporting Club.
Anticipating that the ICC Trophy would be played on "AstroTurf," the visionary Moni provided opportunities for players in the country to practice on "AstroTurf."
Reflecting on Aminul Huq Moni's contributions, current board director Ahmed Sajjadul Alam Bobby said, "Among those who selflessly worked for Bangladesh cricket, Moni Bhai is one of the most notable. His contributions to the success of Mohammedan are undeniable."
A long-time colleague and childhood friend, Syed Mahbub Sobhani, said, "Moni was very talented and loved social gatherings. We spent a lot of time chatting at the Islamia Restaurant in Motijheel. Our discussions always revolved around sports. His interest in sports was remarkable."
This former cricketer and successful organizer passed away on May 31, 2015, at the age of 66.
