In a career spanning over 20 years, Mushfiqur Rahim has been one of the foremost figures in the Bangladesh cricket team. His discipline, perseverance, and exceptional commitment in every match have set him apart from his teammates. This consistent hard work has brought him to the brink of becoming the first Bangladeshi cricketer to play 100 Test matches, which is set to begin the day after tomorrow at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Mirpur against Ireland. This milestone is not merely a number but a testament to Mushfiq’s two decades of dedication.
Ireland team coach Heinrich Malan, who has seen Mushfiq for a comparatively shorter period, praised his professionalism during a press conference. When asked which qualities of Mushfiq he would want his own players to emulate, Malan said:
"I would say his professionalism. I am an early riser, and I’ve seen him at the hotel having breakfast at quarter to six every morning. He is the first to get on the bus. When he arrives at the ground, he warms up, practices batting—while others may not even have arrived yet. When you do so much behind the scenes, the spotlight inevitably comes to you."
Ireland began its Test cricket journey in 2018. In the past seven years, the team has played only 10 Tests. So, reaching the milestone of 100 Test matches for one’s country is a massive achievement for Mushfiq. Malan added:
"Playing 100 Tests for your country is a remarkable accomplishment. As a team, we’ve played just 10 (including the Sylhet Test, 11). This alone shows how long a journey he has undertaken. He has worked extremely hard for Test cricket."
With his characteristic humor, he concluded:
"I hope the next five days don’t go too well for him (laughs). But congratulations to him nonetheless."
Mushfiqur Rahim’s milestone is not just a personal achievement; it marks a golden chapter in the history of Bangladeshi cricket.
