Sudden Protest in Mirpur, Tension Surrounding BCB Headquarters

A sudden sense of unrest swept across the area in front of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) headquarters in Mirpur this afternoon. As midday traffic moved in its usual rhythm, a group of people marched toward the premises and began chanting loud slogans, creating immediate curiosity and unease among onlookers.

Around 12 pm, nearly a hundred protesters gathered in front of the BCB office. They raised strong slogans targeting Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, who resigned as the board’s sports adviser the previous day, and BCB vice-president Faruk Ahmed.

The protesters, who concealed their identities, shouted aggressive slogans. From their tone, it was evident that their anger was intense.
They shouted:
“Asif’s agents, beware,” “Stop doing brokerage or your back skin won’t remain,” “Break the black hands of the syndicate.”
Traffic on the adjacent road came to a brief halt during their chanting.

The demonstration took place without any banners, and no organizational identity was visible among the protesters. When asked about the purpose of the protest, a young man from the front row said,
“This is the demand of the people. We do not accept this corruption in the BCB.”
He claimed they were “local general citizens,” though they could not clearly explain their identity or affiliations.

The protesters could not provide a concrete answer when asked why they were demonstrating just a day after Asif Mahmud’s resignation. However, their primary demand seemed consistent: they wanted an investigation into alleged corruption. They said they wanted
an investigation into Asif Mahmud’s corruption.

No slogans were directed at the current BCB president Aminul Islam. When questioned, the protesters said they had not heard anything negative about Aminul yet. In their words, they might understand more “after some more days.”

When asked why they were chanting against Faruk Ahmed, the protesters claimed that
he and Asif were the ‘main masterminds’ of the syndicate.
But when journalists pointed out that Faruk was not the current BCB president, the protesters remained silent for a moment—raising further questions about the accuracy of their claims.

During the incident, the presence of army personnel inside the BCB office was noticeable. The protesters did not gather directly at the entrance; instead, they marched along the front road, chanted slogans for about ten minutes, and then dispersed.
