After winning the toss and opting to field, Australia watched Zimbabwe post 169-2, setting the stage for the tournament’s first big shock. Chasing a target of 170, Australia lost wickets in quick succession towards the end and lost momentum. A brilliant diving catch by Tony Munyonga to dismiss Ben Dwarshuis further dented the Australians’ hopes.

Blessing Muzarabani (4-17) and Brad Evans (3-23) starred with the ball as Australia were bowled out for 146 in 19.3 overs. Matt Renshaw fought hard with 65 off 44 balls, while Glenn Maxwell scored 31 off 32 deliveries, but Zimbabwe seized control by claiming four wickets inside the powerplay. It was their second consecutive win in Group B.

Earlier, Brian Bennett anchored the innings with an unbeaten 64 off 56 balls. Tadiwanashe Marumani (35) and Ryan Burl (35) made valuable contributions, while captain Sikandar Raza’s late blitz of 25 off 13 deliveries propelled Zimbabwe to a competitive total.

It was the first T20 World Cup meeting between the two sides since Zimbabwe’s famous five-wicket win over Australia in the inaugural edition in 2007, and once again Zimbabwe emerged victorious.

Travis Head led Australia in the absence of regular captain Mitchell Marsh, who was sidelined with a testicular injury sustained in the nets. Marsh had also missed Australia’s previous match against Ireland.
