Nahid Rana Fined for Unnecessary Aggression
Bangladesh’s young pacer Nahid Rana drew attention on the thrilling first day of the Sylhet Test for an unexpected incident. He was penalized for breaching discipline after throwing the ball unnecessarily at an opposing batsman while fielding off his own delivery. The ICC imposed a 25% match fee fine for violating Level-1 of the Code of Conduct.
The incident occurred during Ireland’s 27th over. While fielding off his own delivery, Nahid threw the ball at batsman Cade Carmichael, which hit his pad, even though Carmichael had not left the crease. The International Cricket Council (ICC) described the act as “irrelevant and dangerous conduct.”
In addition to the fine, Nahid received a demerit point on his record. This is his first offense in the past 24 months. Match referee Andy Pycroft noted that since Nahid voluntarily accepted the proposed sanction, no formal hearing was required. The incident was reported by on-field umpires Sam Nogajski and Ahsan Raja, third umpire Richard Illingworth, and fourth umpire Tanvir Ahmed.
According to ICC regulations, the minimum penalty for a Level-1 offense is an official warning, while the maximum punishment is a 50% match fee deduction and one or two demerit points. If a player accumulates four or more demerit points within 24 months, they are converted into suspension points, which can result in a ban from one Test or two One-Day/Two T20 matches.
