New Zealand set West Indies a daunting target on the back of Devon Conway’s remarkable achievement in the third Test. At stumps on the fourth day, the visitors needed a further 419 runs to win with all 10 wickets intact. West Indies reached 43 without loss on Sunday, with Brandon King on 37 and John Campbell unbeaten on two.
Earlier, New Zealand declared their second innings at 302 for 2. After scoring 227 in the first innings, Conway followed it up with a century in the second to become just the 10th batter in Test history to score a double century and a hundred in the same match. The elite list also includes Brian Lara, Sunil Gavaskar, Graham Gooch, Kumar Sangakkara and Shubman Gill. Tom Latham also scored centuries in both innings of the match, remaining unbeaten on 101 in the second innings.
Conway and Latham set a world record by combining for 515 runs as an opening pair across the match. Their 323-run partnership in the first innings laid the foundation for New Zealand’s dominance. In a bid to score quickly, the pair added 157 runs before the interval on the fourth day. Kane Williamson contributed 40, while Rachin Ravindra smashed a rapid 46 off 23 balls.
Earlier, West Indies were bowled out for 420 in their first innings, conceding a 155-run lead despite a resolute 123 from Kavem Hodge. For New Zealand, Jacob Duffy claimed four wickets to take his tally for the series to 18.
The highest successful fourth-innings run chase in Test history is 418. To surpass that mark on the final day, West Indies will have to achieve the seemingly impossible in their bid to level the series, setting up a historic challenge ahead.
