Azharuddin Reveals the Secret Behind Siraj’s Remarkable Fitness
The dramatic end to the Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy has introduced a new hero to Indian cricket — Mohammad Siraj. In the final Test at The Oval, his fiery spell led India to victory over England, levelling the five-match series. Siraj not only finished as the highest wicket-taker of the series with 23 scalps but also bowled an astonishing 185.3 overs — a testament to his stamina and consistency.
The secret behind this sustained pace and sharpness? According to former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin, it’s “Nalli Gosht Biryani and Paya”.
Both hailing from Hyderabad, Azharuddin and Siraj share the same hometown connection. Speaking to England’s David Gower, Azhar said,
“Siraj has been brilliant. For that, we should thank Nalli Gosht Biryani and Paya. These dishes have given him strength, made his legs powerful, and filled his heart with enthusiasm.”
Azhar added that throughout the series, Siraj seemed driven by a hunger for success and an unyielding determination to fight for the country. In the Oval Test, with Jasprit Bumrah absent, he unhesitatingly shouldered the entire bowling responsibility. His incisive bowling repeatedly trapped English batters, sealing the match.
In Azhar’s words, “He is now the brightest new star on the map of Indian cricket.”
