Bangladesh Denied Victory in Abu Dhabi Test After Squandering Crucial Chances

Bangladesh came agonisingly close to victory in Abu Dhabi but were ultimately left disappointed. Despite remaining in control for much of the fourth day, the Tigers failed to capitalise on their opportunities on the final day, allowing Afghanistan to escape with a hard-fought draw. Showing tremendous patience and resilience, Afghanistan finished on 346 for 8 to save the Test.

Missed catches and a squandered run-out opportunity proved costly for Bangladesh. Sidikullah Atal’s magnificent 111 off 332 balls, combined with the lower-order batters’ determination, denied Bangladesh a taste of victory. With 21 overs remaining in the day, a series of missed opportunities prevented the Tigers from applying decisive pressure on the Afghan batters.

After captain Hashmatullah Shahidi retired hurt, Atal and Ikram Alikhil dug in at the crease, forcing Bangladesh to endure a prolonged wait for a breakthrough. Eventually, Ebadot Hossain provided the breakthrough when Litton Das pulled off a superb diving catch to his left, ending the 66-run resistance.

Meanwhile, wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das achieved a remarkable individual milestone with an outstanding all-round performance behind and in front of the stumps. Alongside scoring a fifty and a century across the two innings, he recorded eight dismissals in the match, surpassing South African Denis Lindsay’s previous record to create a new milestone.

Bangladesh’s hopes of victory soared after Taijul Islam dismissed Atal for 111 after the tea break. However, tailenders Qais Ahmad and Zia-ur-Rehman dug in stubbornly during the final overs, frustrating Bangladesh’s bowlers and ensuring that all the Tigers’ efforts ended in disappointment.
