PSL 2026 to Be Played Behind Closed Doors Amid West Asia Crisis
The ongoing crisis in West Asia has cast a shadow over the Pakistan Super League. In this uncertain situation, a major decision has been taken to stage PSL 2026 in empty stadiums.
Although the original schedule included six venues, it has now been reduced to just two cities. All matches of the tournament will now be held in Lahore and Karachi.
Not only has the number of venues been reduced, but the opening ceremony scheduled in Lahore has also been cancelled. Organisers chose not to take risks given the situation.
PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi stated that the possibility of allowing spectators later in the tournament has not been completely ruled out. However, it will depend on how quickly the Iran-related crisis comes to an end.
The instability in West Asia has also triggered a global oil crisis. Pakistan has been significantly affected, particularly due to disruptions in oil supply through the Strait of Hormuz.
The government has already urged citizens to limit movement. Measures such as closing schools, introducing work-from-home arrangements, and extending Eid holidays have also been implemented.
In this context, after discussions with security agencies, the PCB decided to continue the tournament as per schedule. However, to avoid large gatherings, matches will be held without spectators.
The financial impact on franchises has also been taken into consideration. Naqvi confirmed that franchises will be compensated for revenue losses, and ticket holders will be refunded.
He also expressed regret to cities that will miss out on hosting matches this year. In particular, Peshawar was scheduled to host a match on March 28, which will no longer take place.
PSL 2026 is set to begin on March 26, with the final scheduled for May 3.
