Tiger Coach Focuses on Afghanistan-Zimbabwe Clash After Defeat to Zimbabwe
Bangladesh’s hopes of reaching the final of the ongoing tri-nation cricket tournament have become increasingly uncertain following their defeat to Zimbabwe in the opening match.
Despite the growing doubts over their chances of making it to the title-deciding clash, Bangladesh head coach Phil Simmons is not ready to give up just yet. Speaking at a press conference in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, on Monday, he officially expressed the team’s determination to keep their hopes alive.
The Caribbean coach pointed out that Bangladesh’s chances of progressing in the tournament would largely depend on the outcome of the match between Afghanistan and Zimbabwe. Explaining the complicated equation surrounding the Afghanistan-Zimbabwe encounter and what Bangladesh need to do next, Simmons said,
“We have to see what happens in this game. If certain things happen in this match and we get an equation or a calculation of what we need to do in the next game to get into the final, that would be good for us. And if we win the next match, then we know it is a straightforward win. So, until this game is over, we can assess what opportunities we have.”
Speaking about the absence of Litton Das and the team’s expectations from the player who will replace him, the Bangladesh head coach acknowledged the significance of losing a player of his calibre.
“We will always miss a player of that quality, and that is only natural. But it creates an opportunity for someone else to come in, hold that position and help the team win matches. That is what we are trying to build here. When someone is unavailable, another player comes in, takes his place and does what is required in that position. So, hopefully, whoever bats in his position in the next match will fulfil that responsibility properly,” Simmons said.
Meanwhile, in the tournament’s second match, Afghanistan set Zimbabwe a daunting target of 295 runs for victory. Afghanistan’s imposing total was built around a superb century from Sediqullah Atal, who scored 102, and an impressive 90-run innings from Ibrahim Zadran.
A victory for Zimbabwe would secure their place in the final, while an Afghanistan win would leave the finalists to be decided by the outcome of the final group-stage match between Bangladesh and Afghanistan.
