Bangladesh End Asian Games Campaign Empty-Handed After Loss to Sri Lanka
Bangladesh’s hopes of winning a medal at the Asian Games have come to an end. The Litton Das-led side suffered a heavy 63-run defeat to Sri Lanka in the third-place playoff, ending their campaign without a medal.
Sri Lanka were in deep trouble after losing four wickets for just 21 runs after being put into bat. However, Tharindu Ratnayake and Sadira Bandara steadied the innings and helped their team recover from the early collapse. Their responsible partnership guided Sri Lanka to a competitive total of 165 for 9 in 20 overs.
Sri Lankan all-rounder Ratnayake turned the game around with a destructive batting display. He reached his half-century in just 27 balls before finishing with a blistering 65 off 32 deliveries, including seven fours and five sixes. His explosive innings helped Sri Lanka score a remarkable 83 runs in the final five overs.
Mehedi Hasan claimed two wickets in one over, while Aliss Al Islam also picked up his first international wicket. However, Bangladesh’s bowlers conceded too many runs towards the end. Mustafizur Rahman conceded 25 runs in the 14th over, while Rishad Hossain gave away 37 runs in his final two overs.
Chasing 166 for victory, Bangladesh suffered a disastrous start with the bat. Openers Saif Hassan and Tanzid Hasan were dismissed before Bangladesh could add a single run to the scoreboard. Captain Litton Das was then bowled by Nuwan Thushara for a duck at 9, leaving Bangladesh in serious trouble early in the chase.
Towhid Hridoy briefly raised hopes in the middle, but his stay at the crease was short-lived. He scored 11 off six balls before departing quickly. Parvez Hossain and Mehedi Hasan then fell off consecutive deliveries, leaving Bangladesh reeling at 64 for 6 and virtually out of the contest.
The lower-order batters could do little more than reduce the margin of defeat, and Bangladesh were bowled out before completing their allotted 20 overs. After suffering a six-wicket defeat to Pakistan in the semi-final, Bangladesh’s disappointing loss to Sri Lanka means they will return home empty-handed without a medal.
