Josh Inglis Ruled Out of South Africa Series with Injury Blow to Australia

Australia have suffered an injury setback midway through their series against South Africa, with Josh Inglis ruled out of the remaining ODIs after sustaining an injury to his right finger. The wicketkeeper-batter picked up the injury while fielding in the first ODI, raising major doubts over his availability for next month’s important Test series.

Cricket Australia has confirmed that Inglis will be sent back home for further medical assessment. He will undergo examinations there, and his availability for the three-match Test series will be determined after the medical reports are reviewed.

Inglis’ injury opens the door for fellow wicketkeeper Alex Carey, who will return to the playing XI with the gloves in Sunday’s ODI. In recent matches when both players featured together, Carey had been fielding while Inglis took on wicketkeeping duties.

If Inglis fails to recover in time for the Test series, Australia will have to bring in another backup wicketkeeper. Josh Philippe and Sam Harper, who are currently with the Australia A squad in India, are among the leading candidates for the role. Experienced wicketkeeper-batter Peter Handscomb could also be considered.

Inglis, who has played five Tests for Australia, has added further pressure to the team’s Test plans with his injury. In particular, if Alex Carey suffers an injury during the series, Australia could face a shortage of wicketkeeping options. As a result, the selectors may need to move quickly to identify a replacement.
