Will Bangladesh Finally Break Their Wait in The Hundred

When England’s 100-ball tournament, The Hundred, was launched in 2021, a question immediately surfaced—while cricketers from around the world were getting opportunities, would Bangladesh remain mere spectators? Four years on, that question still lacks a clear answer. However, the context appears slightly different this time. A total of 23 Bangladeshi cricketers have registered for the draft. The number is certainly encouraging, but how realistic their chances are will depend largely on team strategies and specific squad requirements.

The most talked-about name is Mustafizur Rahman. His £100,000 reserve price is not just a figure—it reflects his established reputation in international franchise cricket. Years of experience across various leagues have shaped him into a dependable pace option. In English conditions, his variation-based bowling could prove effective. Whether franchises prioritize experience will be one of the key storylines to watch.

Among the younger prospects, Rishad Hossain has drawn attention. Leg-spin has become a vital weapon in the shorter formats of the game. Although relatively new on the international stage, Rishad is considered a promising talent. His 13-wicket haul for Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash Leagueunderlines his capability. His ability to strike in the middle overs could make him an attractive option for franchises.

Competition, however, will be intense. With nearly a thousand players in the draft pool, the presence of 23 Bangladeshis is a positive sign but offers no guarantees. Overseas slots are limited, and historically, certain cricketing nations have enjoyed stronger market demand in England. Beyond performance, factors such as commercial value and overall team balance often influence selection decisions.

Notably absent from the list is Shakib Al Hasan. His omission leaves a gap in terms of experience but simultaneously opens the door for new faces to step forward. No Bangladeshi cricketer has featured in The Hundred so far. This year’s draft, therefore, is not merely about securing contracts—it carries the possibility of ending a long wait.

The tournament is scheduled to begin in July. The draft results will ultimately determine whether Bangladeshi cricketers can finally step onto this new platform.
