BCB wants to see Mushfiqur as a coach after retirement
After appointing former Bangladesh captain Mahmudullah Riyad in mentoring and coaching roles, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) now hopes to see Mushfiqur Rahim take on a similar position in the future. BCB Game Development Chairman Faim Sinha has said that the board plans to bring Mushfiq into its coaching structure after he retires completely from international cricket, provided he is interested.
Recently, the BCB appointed Mahmudullah as the batting coach for the Bangladesh ‘A’ team’s tour of Australia. Before that, he had also served as a mentor for the Bangladesh Under-19 team. Since then, discussions have emerged over whether Mushfiqur will follow a similar path after his playing career.
At present, Mushfiqur only plays Test cricket at the international level while continuing to feature regularly in domestic competitions.
Speaking to Cricbuzz, Faim Sinha said, “Mahmudullah and Mushfiq have represented Bangladesh at the highest level for many years. It is our responsibility to ensure that the next generation of cricketers benefits from the wealth of experience they have gained throughout their international careers.”
He added, “If Mushfiq is interested in coaching or wants to remain involved with cricket, we would definitely like to bring him into our system. He has spent many years in international cricket and has witnessed the evolution of the modern game firsthand. If we fail to involve someone with his experience, it will be our failure.”
Meanwhile, Faim also announced that the BCB is forming a three-member technical committee to evaluate and improve the performance of local coaches. The committee will comprise Mohammad Salahuddin, Mizanur Rahman Babul and Sohel Islam.
According to Faim, the board will organise workshops for coaches where they will be trained on implementing Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). A structured performance evaluation system will be introduced immediately after the implementation of the KPIs. Senior coaches will also be assigned to monitor district and divisional coaches.
In addition, the BCB is planning to increase the salaries of district-level coaches by at least 70 percent. Faim said a new grading system will be introduced under which district, divisional and central coaches will be placed in different grades based on their qualifications and performance evaluations. He acknowledged that the current salary structure has become inadequate due to the lack of proper increments and appraisals over a long period, adding that the new initiative aims to create a more effective and attractive system for coaches across the country.
