India Win Gold After Beating Pakistan by 19 Runs in the Final
India won the gold medal in the Asian Games cricket tournament after defeating arch-rivals Pakistan by 19 runs in the final. With this victory, India maintained their dominance in the tournament while also securing their 19th gold medal of the ongoing Games.
After winning the toss, Indian captain Shreyas Iyer opted to bat first. Carrying forward the momentum from their semifinal victory over Sri Lanka, India came into the match aiming to post another massive total. A blistering start from opener Abhishek Sharma and a destructive assault from vice-captain Tilak Varma helped India pile up a huge total of 211 runs in the allotted overs.
Chasing a mammoth target, Pakistan got off to a slow start, but Hasan Nawaz brought the match to life during the middle overs. His rapid half-century put India under pressure and threatened to take the game away from them. He was particularly aggressive against leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi, scoring 44 runs from his three overs. However, chasing such a huge target proved impossible for Pakistan on the difficult Nishin pitch.
Opener Abhishek Sharma played a key role in rapidly increasing India’s total. Although Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Sanju Samson departed quickly during the powerplay, the left-handed batter continued his assault at the other end. He smashed 61 runs off just 28 balls, including three fours and seven sixes, producing a highly aggressive innings.
India’s middle order came under some pressure when Ishan Kishan and captain Shreyas Iyer were dismissed within a span of six balls. However, Tilak Varma brushed aside the pressure with ease. Taking on the Pakistani bowlers on the slow pitch, he brought up his half-century in just 21 balls, hitting three fours and four sixes, and propelled India towards a huge total.
Pakistan needed 44 runs from the final 12 balls to win, but Jasprit Bumrah’s brilliant bowling in the 19th over virtually decided the outcome of the match. With 33 runs required from the final over, Pakistan eventually fell short by 19 runs.
With this victory, India secured their seventh consecutive T20I win over Pakistan since 2021. Overall, in 18 international T20 meetings between the two sides since 2007, this was India’s 15th victory.
