Afghanistan’s star legspinner Rashid Khan is reducing his involvement in Test cricket to sustain a longer international career. Following a back injury in 2023, he stepped away from the red-ball format on medical advice.

The 27-year-old now plans to play only one Test per year. He fulfilled that plan in January 2025 with a match against Zimbabwe. Although there is a possibility of a Test against India in 2026, it now appears uncertain.

Rashid revealed that in a Test in Bulawayo about 15 months ago, he bowled a total of 67 overs, including 55 in a single innings, which was extremely demanding. Despite medical advice against playing, he went ahead. His doctor was later shocked to learn about the workload and warned him against taking such risks.

Even after being diagnosed with a back injury, Rashid chose to delay surgery to participate in the 2023 World Cup. That decision affected his performance and increased his pain. Now, he is prioritizing better workload management and taking greater care of his body. He has also indicated that he may skip the Test against India scheduled for June 6, 2026.

According to Rashid, the lack of a long-term target in Test cricket and Afghanistan’s slim chances in the World Test Championship make it less worthwhile to take risks in the format. Instead, he is focusing on preparing himself for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

At present, his main focus is the IPL. Recently, he picked up 3 wickets for 17 runs in four overs to help Gujarat Titans secure a one-run victory over Delhi Capitals.

Since making his Test debut in 2018, Rashid Khan has played only six matches, taking 45 wickets at an average of 20.44.
