Malibongwe Maketa Appointed Assistant Coach of Bangladesh National Cricket Team
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has appointed South African coach Malibongwe Maketa as the assistant coach of the Bangladesh national cricket team. He has been appointed on a two-year contract running from October 2026 to November 2028. The 46-year-old Proteas coach will join the national team’s coaching staff directly in the United Arab Emirates.
Holding a CSA Level 4 coaching qualification, Maketa brings two decades of coaching experience to the role. He served as the assistant coach of the South Africa national team from 2017 to 2019. Maketa, who was part of the Proteas coaching setup during the 2019 World Cup, was involved in South Africa's historic Test series victories over India and Australia.
Additionally, Maketa earned a strong reputation for scouting and nurturing young talent as head coach of the South Africa ‘A’ team, Under-19 team, and the CSA National Academy. Under his guidance, the South Africa U-19 team reached the World Cup semi-finals.
On taking up his new role, Malibongwe Maketa said: "I am delighted to be appointed assistant coach of the Bangladesh team. I would like to thank the BCB for showing faith in me. Bangladesh has a group of promising young cricketers. I look forward to working alongside Head Coach Phil Simmons and the rest of the coaching staff to contribute to the overall development of these players."
