Andre Russell Announces Retirement from International Cricket — Final Bow at Sabina Park
Star all-rounder and two-time World Cup winner Andre Russell is set to bid farewell to international cricket. The upcoming three-match T20I series against Australia will mark his final appearance in West Indies colours.
Russell will play his last international matches on 20 and 22 July 2025 at Sabina Park in Jamaica, his hometown. The explosive all-rounder missed last year’s series against England due to injury.
A key member of the 2012 and 2016 ICC T20 World Cup-winning squads, Russell has represented West Indies in 84 T20 Internationals, scoring 1,078 runs and taking 61 wickets. Since 2019, he has featured only in the shortest format at the international level.
Speaking on his retirement, Russell said:
“Playing for West Indies has been one of the proudest moments of my life. As a kid, I never imagined reaching this stage, but my love and commitment to the game kept pushing me forward. I've always wanted to leave a mark in the maroon jersey and inspire the younger generation.”
Reflecting on retiring at his home ground, Russell expressed deep emotion:
“Playing in front of my family and the fans of my city is always special. I want to make my final moments on this stage memorable. I hope to leave a positive message for the next generation.”
West Indies head coach and former captain Darren Sammy also paid tribute, saying:
“Russell has always been a professional and fierce competitor. Whether I was his captain or now his coach, his hunger to perform never faded. I wish him all the best for the next chapter of his journey.”
Though Andre Russell is stepping away from international cricket, his whirlwind innings and match-winning performances in T20 franchise leagues around the world will continue to live on in the hearts of cricket fans.
