Asalanka Cautious Ahead of ODI Series Against Bangladesh, Respects Mustafizur Threat
Sri Lankan captain Charith Asalanka remains wary ahead of the three-match ODI series against Bangladesh, acknowledging that victory will not come easily despite home advantage. Speaking on the eve of the series, Asalanka emphasized mutual respect between the two sides and identified Mustafizur Rahman as a major threat.
“Mustafiz is a fantastic bowler—he’s proven that time and again,” said Asalanka. “He has taken many wickets for Bangladesh. We have plans in place for him because we know how dangerous he can be.”
The matches will be played at Colombo’s R. Premadasa Stadium, a venue traditionally known for spin-friendly conditions. However, Asalanka is hoping for a surface more favorable to batters. “Usually, Premadasa offers assistance to spinners, but I’d prefer a good batting wicket for this match,” he said. “Let’s see how it turns out tomorrow.”
Despite playing at home, the Sri Lankan captain does not expect an easy ride. “I don’t think this will be an easy win. Every team is a challenge for us, and Bangladesh is a tough opponent. They’ve been playing good cricket lately. When we last played them in Bangladesh, they beat us. So this will be a real challenge.”
When asked about Bangladesh’s new ODI captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Asalanka commented, “As a player, I can say Miraz is a good bowler and batsman. It wouldn’t be appropriate for me to comment on his leadership.”
Speaking about the cricketing bond between the two nations, Asalanka added, “We are good friends. But once we’re on the field, it becomes a rivalry. That’s the kind of competitive spirit fans want to see. Still, at the end of the day, we remain good friends off the field.”
