Faheem Ashraf Reflects on Narrow Defeat: “We Believed Until the End”
Pakistan came agonizingly close to leveling the T20I series but ultimately fell short by just 8 runs in a low-scoring thriller against Bangladesh. With this victory, Bangladesh secured the three-match series 2–0 at home, with one game still to play.
In a match where most of Pakistan's top order struggled, Faheem Ashraf stood out as the lone warrior. The all-rounder played a valiant knock of 51 off 32 balls, keeping Pakistan in the hunt until the final over.
Lack of Partnerships Cost Us the Match
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Faheem admitted that while Pakistan fought hard till the end, the lack of solid partnerships proved costly.
“We knew the wicket would be challenging. From the previous game, we had some idea. The plan today was to build partnerships. That’s what would’ve won us the game.”
Praise for Jakir and Analysis of the Pitch
Faheem lauded Jakir Ali Anik’s match-winning 55-run knock and reflected on the difficult batting conditions in Mirpur.
“Jakir played really well. I’ve played BPL here before, but back then it was winter — the pitches had grass and were better for batting. Now it’s hotter, and the wickets are softer and grip more spin. Batting isn’t easy on this pitch.”
On Pakistan's Batting Collapse
While he refrained from directly criticizing the top order, some frustration did come through.
“Fakhar got out playing on the leg side, someone else was run out — these things happen in cricket. They’ve performed well before. It just didn’t happen today. But our goal was to fight till the end.”
Tactical Approach and Individual Plans
Faheem explained his strategy during the chase, especially targeting certain bowlers:
“We had specific plans for every bowler. Mustafizur is one of the best in the world, so I played cautiously against him. I tried to take more runs off Rishad’s over to reduce pressure in the final over.”
On Ahmed Daniyal’s Brave Effort
Faheem also praised Ahmed Daniyal for his fighting spirit at the death:
“He’s a quality all-rounder, and everyone in Pakistan knows his batting potential. He showed that today. InshAllah, he’ll continue performing well.”
Belief Until the Final Ball
When asked if Pakistan still believed they could win in the final over, Faheem responded confidently:
“Even after losing five wickets for 20 runs, we believed. With Daniyal’s six and our partnership, it felt like we could do it. Even though we lost, we haven’t lost our morale.”
