Even ahead of the Asia Cup, Pakistan continue to stumble in their preparation series. In the ongoing tri-nation tournament in the UAE, Salman Agha’s team suffered a defeat to Afghanistan, once again exposing their fragile fielding unit as the main reason behind their struggles.

According to statistics from cricket-based website Cricbuzz, Pakistan rank the worst fielding side in the world over the past 18 months, with a catch efficiency of just 81.4%.

Since the start of 2024, Pakistan have:

Dropped 48 catches

Missed 98 run-out opportunities

Committed 89 misfields

Among 41 international teams, Pakistan top the charts for both dropped catches and missed run-outs. In terms of misfields, they are second only to the West Indies, who have misfielded 90 times. Additionally, Pakistani fielders have conceded extra runs through 16 overthrows during this period.

Fielding failures also proved costly in their second tri-series match against Afghanistan. Dropped sitters and missed run-out chances at crucial stages turned the game in Afghanistan’s favor.

With the Asia Cup approaching, fielding has now become Pakistan’s biggest concern. Experts warn that unless the team makes rapid improvements in this department, a major collapse on the big stage will be difficult to avoid.
