Ranjan Madugalle’s Milestone: 400th ODI as Match Referee
Ranjan Madugalle has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first match referee to oversee 400 One Day Internationals (ODIs). This landmark was reached during the third ODI between India and Sri Lanka. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has congratulated Madugalle on this achievement, noting that he holds the record for the longest career as an ICC match referee, spanning 31 years.
Madugalle, a long-standing member of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, achieved this feat on Wednesday in Colombo, during the third and final ODI between Sri Lanka and India. To honor this accomplishment, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) and the ICC presented a plaque to Madugalle, with SLC CEO Ashley de Silva making the presentation.
Since 1993, Madugalle has officiated in over 200 Test matches as a match referee, setting a record in the process. His extensive career includes serving as the Chief Match Referee for the ICC. He has refereed a record 216 men’s Test matches, 163 men’s T20 Internationals, 14 women’s ODIs, and eight women’s T20 Internationals.
Before becoming an ICC official, Madugalle played for Sri Lanka as a batter, featuring in 21 Tests and 63 ODIs. His first appointment as an ICC match referee was in December 1993, for a Test match between Pakistan and Zimbabwe in Karachi.
