With a two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, Bangladesh is set to kick off a new cycle of the World Test Championship (WTC). Determined to start on a high, captain Najmul Hossain Shanto addressed the media ahead of the first Test in Galle, sharing insights on team plans, challenges, Angelo Mathews’ farewell, and his own batting position.

Every match is a fresh start,” said Shanto, reflecting on past performances. “Yes, there are some good memories — innings from myself, Mushfiq bhai (Rahim), and Litton (Das). But every series, every match is a new beginning. Those of us batting at the top will aim to give the team a solid start.”

As the new WTC cycle begins, expectations are high, but concerns remain — especially regarding star all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who missed two consecutive practice sessions due to fever.

Speaking on that, Shanto noted:

“This cycle is very important. Looking at the squad we have, if we can play our best cricket, we can do well. Miraz is feeling better than before but remains under observation. We hope to take the field at full strength.”

Shanto also took a moment to acknowledge Angelo Mathews, who is set to retire after the series.

“I’ve played against him many times and have some fond memories. Wishing him all the best — everyone deserves to be honored the way they want to sign off.”

The skipper appeared confident in the team’s balance and depth across departments:

“We have four pacers and four spinners, which gives us a good balance. There’s batting depth and strong bench support too. The selectors picked a well-rounded squad — now it’s about executing the plans. If we play well, we can get good results.”

Galle has traditionally favored spin, with spinners accounting for over 100 wickets in recent matches at the venue. Shanto said the team is aware of the challenge and has prepared accordingly.

“Yes, spinners dominate in Galle, and that’s a challenge. But a solid start with the bat is also key. We’ve done our best to prepare for the conditions.”

Bangladesh begin their 2025–27 WTC journey on June 17, with the first Test at Galle International Stadium.
