In the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL), Royal Challengers Bengaluru tasted defeat in four out of five matches played. Despite forming a strong team each time, Bangalore faces unexpected defeats. On Saturday (April 6), they started batting against Rajasthan Royals and scored 183 runs. The team's head coach, Andy Flower, feels they were a few runs short. Former captain Virat Kohli came to bat and scored a century but remained unbeaten till the end of the innings.
Even after scoring 183 runs, the shortage of runs became evident for Bengaluru. The way Rajasthan Royals chased the target indicates they could have scored more runs behind it, making it seem like the entire time was under pressure. Jos Buttler and captain Sanju Samson's partnership of 148 runs made the match easy for them.
On the other hand, Kohli scored a century in just 67 balls while batting first. With this innings, he now holds the record for the highest number of centuries in IPL history, with eight. At the end of the innings, undefeated with 113 runs.
Team coach Flower said, "We discuss strike rate and aggression. It's a T20 match after all."
"The level of aggression needs to be within a certain limit. You always have to exert pressure on the opposition. On pitches like today's, aggression must be chosen without fail. It's true that none of our top five, except Virat, managed to perform. It's a tough spot. It's not a lack of effort, they have worked hard. They have given everything they have. They just couldn't deliver at the right time."
Kohli's century has earned him a place in the IPL's slowest century list. Bengaluru could have expected some more runs from the rest of the batters. Where Faf du Plessis bid farewell after playing an innings of 44 runs with Kohli at the opening, Glenn Maxwell and Shaurav Chauhan scored 1 and 9 runs respectively.
