Just a day after announcing his retirement from international cricket, Nicholas Pooran has been appointed captain of MI New York for the upcoming 2025 Major League Cricket (MLC) season. The 29-year-old replaces Kieron Pollard at the helm of the franchise.
Pooran was a standout performer in the 2023 edition of MLC, finishing as the tournament’s top run-scorer with 388 runs at a staggering strike rate of 167. His unbeaten 137 in the final* was instrumental in leading MI New York to the championship.
The Trinidadian wicketkeeper-batter brings leadership experience from the international stage, having captained West Indies in white-ball formats. However, his stint saw limited success, with just 8 wins in 30 matches as full-time captain before he stepped down following West Indies’ early exit from the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia.
Despite retiring from international duties, Pooran remains a hot commodity in global franchise cricket. His elevation to captaincy underscores MI New York’s trust in his T20 prowess and tactical acumen.
The 2025 MLC season kicks off on June 12, with MI New York beginning their campaign on June 13 against Texas Super Kings. The squad boasts notable stars including Quinton de Kock, Kieron Pollard, and Rashid Khan.
