Bangladesh Looks Ahead to Pakistan Series, Leaving World Cup Disappointment Behind
The decision to miss the T20 World Cup has created both mental and strategic challenges for the Bangladesh cricket team. While players feel the disappointment of losing the chance to compete on the international stage, they are professionally handling it and focusing on the upcoming ODI series and preparation for the 2027 World Cup.
Speaking to the media in Mirpur ahead of the BCL final, Central Region representative and opener Saif Hasan acknowledged the lingering disappointment within the team. Saif said, “Everyone is indeed feeling low. There’s no point in denying that. But as professional cricketers, it’s crucial for us to overcome this.”
Referring to the upcoming ODI schedule and World Cup preparations, he added, “Since we have ODIs ahead and the World Cup coming, the sooner we prepare, the better it will be for us.”
The impact of missing the T20 World Cup goes beyond mere disappointment. A long period without international competition means players have not been regularly exposed to the pressures of high-level cricket, which can affect strategic consistency, decision-making under pressure, and mental resilience. Saif noted, “Over the past year to year-and-a-half, we haven’t had many opportunities to play ODIs. We’ve played a few, but they were in the middle of T20s. The upcoming series is very important for preparation. Any gaps we have must be addressed during preparation.”
The forthcoming three-match Bangladesh-Pakistan ODI series (March 11–13) is seen as a major test of the team’s mental and strategic readiness. On paper, Pakistan is strong in both batting and bowling, particularly in the middle order and pace attack.
Saif expressed hope that, like in the BCL and other T20 tournaments, appropriate sporting pitches will benefit both batsmen and bowlers. He said, “I don’t know what the pitch conditions will be like. But in the recent T20 tournaments we played, the pitches were good. If we get similar sporting wickets, it will help both batsmen and bowlers.”
The challenge of the Pakistan series increases due to pitch conditions, batting order, and bowling coordination. Sporting wickets will favor the batsmen, but pacers and medium-pace bowlers will need to execute their plans precisely. The coordination of the opening pair, middle order, and spin bowlers, as well as the balance between batting and bowling, will play a key role in the series.
To secure direct qualification for the 2027 ODI World Cup, Bangladesh must be among the top eight in the rankings by March 31. Currently, the team is ranked ninth. However, with host South Africa in fifth place, being in the top eight is not mandatory. Saif believes the Pakistan series will provide the team with preparation for ranking improvement, mental resilience, and adapting to international pressure.
Having moved past the disappointment of missing the T20 World Cup, the Bangladesh cricket team is now mentally stable and strategically focused. Through the Pakistan series, the team will test physical fitness, mental steadiness, and match continuity. With proper preparation and coordination, this series can help the team strengthen its position for the ODI World Cup.
As Saif emphasized, “Any gaps we have must be addressed in preparation. The Pakistan series will be challenging for us, but it also gives an opportunity to prepare properly.”
