Bangladesh seeks major Chinese investment and technical support for sports sector development
The government of Bangladesh has sought significant investment and technical cooperation from China to modernize and develop the country’s sports sector infrastructure. On Tuesday (March 31), State Minister for Youth and Sports Md. Aminul Haque met with Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen during a courtesy call at the Secretariat, where the interest was expressed.
During the meeting, the State Minister emphasized the need for Chinese investment in Bangladesh’s proposed sports institute, as well as the inclusion of skilled Chinese coaches and advanced training in disciplines such as volleyball, archery, and shooting.
He also informed the ambassador that the current government is working to promote all sports equally, alongside cricket and football. As part of this initiative, special sports allowances for athletes and a digital sports card program have been launched. The State Minister formally invited China’s national men’s football team to play a friendly match in Bangladesh and expressed hope for China’s active participation in the country’s emerging sports industry.
In response, Ambassador Yao Wen highly praised Bangladesh’s digital sports initiatives and the monthly allowance program for athletes. He expressed strong interest and optimism regarding investment in youth training centers and the proposed sports institute. He also assured that the proposal for a friendly match involving China’s national football team would be given due consideration, adding that regular exchange of sports equipment and expertise between the two countries would further enrich the sector.
