Cricket South Africa Suffers Major Financial Losses, Increasing Reliance on India

Cricket South Africa (CSA) suffered a financial loss of 440.6 million rand (approximately US$27 million) in the 2025–26 financial year. Fewer matches being played at home, lower revenue from broadcasting rights, and the appreciation of the local currency, the rand, against the US dollar have been identified as the main reasons behind the loss.

CSA said it expects to suffer another loss in the 2026–27 season, despite having series scheduled against major teams such as Australia, England and Bangladesh. Broadcasting rights are no longer generating as much revenue as before due to internal budget cuts by television broadcasters.

Amid this situation, South Africa is becoming increasingly reliant on India for its future financial prosperity. Although CSA incurred a loss of 10.3 million rand while hosting a recent series against the Indian women’s cricket team, it considers the event a positive investment in maintaining its relationship with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). India are scheduled to tour South Africa after the 2027 ODI World Cup, and CSA expects to generate significant profits from that tour.

However, CSA is also trying to reduce its reliance on a single source by increasing sponsorship revenue and exploring alternative income streams. Over the past three years, the number of its commercial partners has increased from eight to 19, while the organization is also making good profits from its domestic T20 tournament, SA20.
