Head Coach Heinrich Malan Steps Down After Irelands Historic Series Win
Just a day after guiding Ireland to a historic T20I series victory over India, head coach Heinrich Malan has stepped down from his role.
Although his contract was due to run until early 2027, Malan believes this is the right time to begin a new chapter for the team as it prepares for next year’s ODI World Cup.
Appointed as Ireland’s head coach in 2022, Malan led the team to three consecutive T20 World Cups and three Test victories during his tenure. Under his leadership, Ireland recorded a memorable T20 World Cup win over England, secured their maiden Test victory against Afghanistan, claimed their first-ever home Test win against Zimbabwe, and most recently completed a historic 2-0 home T20I series sweep over India. The team also registered notable victories against Pakistan, West Indies and South Africa.
In his farewell message, Malan said, “It has been an absolute privilege to work with these players, the coaching staff and the wider Irish cricket community. My family and I have had a wonderful time here, and we will always look back on our time in Irish cricket with great affection.”
Malan’s departure will allow the incoming head coach to begin working with the ODI squad immediately. Ireland are scheduled to host Afghanistan in a five-match ODI series in August.
Currently ranked 11th in the ICC ODI rankings, Ireland may have to qualify through the global qualifying tournament to secure a place at the 2027 ODI World Cup. The team has not featured in the 50-over World Cup since 2015. However, the 2027 edition will feature 14 teams, making it the first World Cup since 2019 to include more than 10 participating nations.
