Pat Cummins' Consecutive Hat-trick Record: A Bond with the Number 3
In the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup, Pat Cummins seems to have a remarkable bond with the number 3. During the group stage, he took 3 wickets each against England and Namibia. Moving into the Super Eights, Cummins continued his streak by claiming 3 wickets each against Bangladesh and Afghanistan. Notably, his 3 wickets in the last two matches came as part of hat-tricks. Cummins has become the first bowler in T20 World Cup history to achieve two hat-tricks.
Against Bangladesh, Pat Cummins dismissed Mahmudullah Riyad, Sheikh Mahedi Hasan, and Towhid Hridoy in consecutive deliveries.
Against Afghanistan, he took down Rashid Khan, Karim Janat, and Gulbadin Naib with three successive balls. If not for a dropped catch by David Warner, Cummins might have secured four wickets in four balls.
Pat Cummins is the first bowler in T20 World Cup history to achieve two hat-tricks, and he is the fifth bowler to do so in international T20s. Prior to him, New Zealand’s Tim Southee, Sri Lanka’s Lasith Malinga, Serbia’s Mark Pavlovic, and Malta’s Wasim Abbas each have two T20 hat-tricks.
This makes the total number of hat-tricks in international T20s 60. Sri Lankan bowlers lead with 6 hat-tricks, followed by bowlers from New Zealand and Australia with 5 each.
Before Pat Cummins (2), other Australian bowlers who have taken hat-tricks include Brett Lee (against Bangladesh, 2007), Ashton Agar (against South Africa, 2020), and Nathan Ellis (against Bangladesh, 2021).
Afghanistan, Belgium, Denmark, Ireland, Malta, Nigeria, Oman, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Serbia, and Uganda also have bowlers with 2 hat-tricks each.
Bowlers from Argentina, Bahrain, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Germany, Ghana, India, Kenya, Kuwait, Malaysia, Namibia, Nepal, Netherlands, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Spain, Tanzania, Thailand, UAE, West Indies, and Zimbabwe have each taken a hat-trick once. However, no bowler from Bangladesh has yet achieved this feat.
