Rishads Devastating Spin Powers Bangladesh to Commanding Win Over West Indies
Bangladesh started their home ODI series against the West Indies in style, clinching a dominant 74-run victory in the first match at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur. The hero of the day was young leg-spinner Rishad Hossain, whose brilliant spell ripped through the Caribbean batting lineup.
After being sent in to bat, Bangladesh got off to a shaky start. Openers Soumya Sarkar and Saif Hassan both fell for single-digit scores, leaving the hosts struggling at 8 for 2 under pressure from pacer Jayden Seales, who took two early wickets.
However, Towhid Hridoy and Mahidul Islam Ankon steadied the innings with a crucial partnership. Hridoy’s fighting half-century (50) and Ankon’s composed 46 guided Bangladesh to a total of 207 all out before the completion of 50 overs. Rishad added valuable late runs with a quickfire 26 off 13 balls, ensuring a defendable score for the Tigers.
For the visitors, Jayden Seales picked up 3 wickets, while Roston Chase and Justin Greaves claimed two each.
In reply, West Indies made a solid start but soon crumbled under the brilliance of Rishad Hossain. The leg-spinner produced a sensational spell, taking 6 wickets for just 35 runs in 6.3 overs — his career-best performance in ODIs — as the visitors were bowled out for 133 runs.
Opener Brandon King top-scored with 44 off 60 balls, but none of the other batters could offer meaningful resistance. The middle and lower order collapsed spectacularly, losing 7 wickets for just 51 runs.
With this emphatic victory, Bangladesh took a 1–0 lead in the three-match ODI series. The second ODI will be played on Tuesday at the same venue.
