Ryan van Niekerk Faces New Challenge in Sri Lankas Fast Bowling Legacy

Sri Lanka Cricket has introduced significant changes to its coaching setup. Former Netherlands coach Ryan van Niekerk has been appointed as the national team’s bowling coach for a two-year term. At the same time, Jordan Gregory has been assigned the role of fielding and spin bowling coach. Sri Lanka Cricket officially announced the decision on Thursday. Both coaches will begin their duties from April 15, 2026.

Traditionally, Sri Lanka has been rich in fast bowling talent. The country once gained global recognition for producing world-class pacers like Chaminda Vaas and Lasith Malinga. Later, players such as Nuwan Kulasekara, Dilhara Fernando, and in recent times Dasun Shanaka and Matheesha Pathirana have carried forward that fast bowling legacy. Taking charge of such a star-studded bowling unit is seen as a major challenge for Ryan van Niekerk.

Van Niekerk’s experience as the Netherlands national team’s bowling coach and interim head coach from 2023 to 2026 is a significant asset. During his tenure, he helped the team improve consistently and played a key role in their preparation for three ICC Men’s World Cups. This experience could help bring a new dimension to Sri Lanka’s fast bowling unit.

Meanwhile, Jordan Gregory will oversee the fielding and spin bowling departments at Sri Lanka’s High Performance Center. Previously, he worked as a fielding consultant for Netherlands cricket. His expertise is expected to contribute significantly to the development of Sri Lanka’s fielding and spin bowling.

With Sri Lanka’s rich fast bowling tradition and a pool of talented current players, Ryan van Niekerk’s experience could help build new strategies and a stronger bowling attack. However, managing a group filled with star pacers will also be a challenging task, according to experts. It now remains to be seen how effectively this new coaching staff can elevate Sri Lanka’s pace attack to the international standard.
