Mahmudullah Riyad Loses Interest as Bangladesh Misses the World Cup

Although the T20 World Cup has begun, the familiar buzz is missing from Bangladesh’s cricketing circles. With the national team absent, the tournament feels largely subdued for local cricket fans. Former Bangladesh captain Mahmudullah Riyad echoed this sentiment, admitting that the Tigers’ absence has also dampened his own interest in the World Cup.

Sharing his feelings about Bangladesh not featuring in the tournament, Mahmudullah said, “Honestly, Bangladesh aren’t there—if my team isn’t playing… my interest has dropped. But the World Cup is a huge tournament. I’m sure the players are missing it too. I’ve heard from a few people and spoken to almost everyone in some way. But it’s not in our hands. At the end of the day, it’s a mega tournament that everyone wants to be part of.”

Speaking about not playing in the Adomya Cup, Riyad said, “I’m not a current cricketer anymore. I’m not someone who should be in national team consideration. I’ve played my cricket—Alhamdulillah. I had a wonderful journey with the Bangladesh team. Now those who are playing for the national team or are worthy of it will take part in this tournament. I’m at home, doing my own work, and I’m happy with that.”

Riyad further added, “I don’t know which way life will go. Right now, I’m enjoying life. I’m still fit and I still want to play cricket. Everything depends on my body, fitness, and performance. If I ever feel that the hunger and drive are gone, I won’t play. As long as it’s there, I’ll keep playing.”

Talking about his future plans, the former captain also said, “It depends on many things. It’s not possible to say anything right now. By Allah’s grace, I had the privilege of playing for Bangladesh for 18 years. Now there’s the BPL, the Premier League, and if I get opportunities in some franchise leagues as well—I’m enjoying it, Alhamdulillah.”
