Australia suffered a 176-run defeat against South Africa, losing the Test series 2-1. On the fifth day of the Cape Town Test, the visitors’ batting lineup crumbled under the combined pressure of Kagiso Rabada and off-spinner Simon Harmer. Chasing a victory target of 288 in the fourth innings, Australia were bowled out for just 111.

Living up to their newly acquired No. 1 ranking, South Africa sealed the victory during the second session of the day. Following Rabada’s brilliant new-ball spell, Harmer produced a magical display of spin bowling. He claimed six wickets for just 16 runs in 21.1 overs. With match figures of 10 wickets for 120 runs, the spinner also achieved the first 10-wicket haul of his career.

Australia’s top-order batting performance was particularly disappointing. Apart from Cameron Green, who scored 27 off 110 deliveries while batting at No. 4, none of the first eight batters managed to face more than 30 balls.

A 45-run ninth-wicket partnership between captain Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon, who remained unbeaten on 33 to finish as Australia’s top scorer, prevented the visitors from being bowled out for less than 100. The stand also helped Australia avoid the embarrassment of being dismissed for under 100 in consecutive Tests, a feat last recorded during the 1936-37 Ashes series.
