Bangladesh Women Lose to Sri Lanka by 4 Runs in Thrilling Tri-Nation Series Final
Bangladesh needed 159 runs to win the title, but lost two wickets before even opening their account, finding themselves in deep trouble right from the start. After overcoming the early collapse and a sluggish start, captain Sadia Islam and Sadia Akter produced explosive batting performances to bring Bangladesh to the brink of a fairytale victory. However, Sri Lanka had the last laugh in a dramatic finish, leaving the Tigresses heartbroken as they fell just four runs short of lifting the trophy.
In the title-deciding match of the Under-19 Women’s Tri-Nation Series at Mirpur, Sri Lanka, batting first after winning the toss, posted a competitive total of 158 for 6 in their allotted 20 overs. Following a strong opening partnership, responsible contributions from the top order helped the visitors build a challenging total, with Sanjana Kavindi leading the way. The opener top-scored with 64 runs, while Umayangana Peiris contributed 28, Balasuriya made 23, and Uppeksha added 22.
In reply, Bangladesh suffered an early setback while chasing the target of 159. Both openers, Maimuna Naher, who faced just two balls, and Achena Jannat, who lasted seven deliveries, were dismissed without scoring. Number three batter Shirina Khatun also departed after scoring just six runs off seven balls, leaving Bangladesh in serious trouble.
Captain Sadia Islam steadied the innings alongside Nishita Akter Nishi, with the pair helping Bangladesh recover from the early collapse in the fourth-wicket partnership. Nishita’s composed 35-run knock brought Bangladesh back into contention. However, the real fireworks came from the Sadia-Sadia partnership. Captain Sadia Islam played a brilliant, leadership-driven innings of 59 off 35 balls, including three fours and a six, to narrow the gap and keep Bangladesh’s hopes alive.
With victory within touching distance, Sadia Akter returned to the pavilion after smashing a whirlwind 35 off just 22 deliveries. However, the failure of the remaining batters proved costly, as Bangladesh were bowled out for 154 in their allotted 20 overs. Falling just four runs short against Sri Lanka, the Tigresses had to settle for the runners-up position in the tournament.
