A Journey of Love, Culture, and Cricket: Shehan Malik in Bangladesh

Shehan Malik is a multifaceted Sri Lankan artist, an actor, content creator, TV host, and sports journalist who has built a bridge between storytelling, travel, and human connection.

Known for his viral content across India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, Shehan has captivated audiences with his charismatic presence both on-screen and online. He has appeared in Sri Lankan teledramas and works for TV Supreme, making him a familiar face in the Sri Lankan entertainment scene.

From Sri Lanka to Bangladesh: A Story Begins

Shehan’s journey to Bangladesh began with friendship. During a visit to Sri Lanka, Asif Hasan and Shehan connected over their shared passion for content and culture. That friendship became an invitation: to cover the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) as a sports journalist. What started as a professional assignment soon evolved into a personal exploration of culture, people, and love.

“I came with curiosity and excitement, unsure what to expect. What I felt the moment I landed in Bangladesh was genuine warmth from the people, beyond anything I had imagined,” Shehan recalls.

Experiencing Bangladeshi Culture

For Shehan, Bangladesh was a revelation. His initial assumptions that the country might have limited travel destinations or historical significance quickly dissolved. From the bustling streets of Dhaka to the serene landscapes of Sylhet, Bangladesh offered history, nature, vibrant culture, and soul-stirring experiences.

Sylhet, in particular, left an indelible mark. The rolling tea gardens, lush greenery, and calm environment reminded him of Sri Lanka, evoking feelings of comfort and nostalgia. Nature, especially the greenery, became the most memorable aspect of his journey.

Beyond landscapes, Shehan was deeply moved by Bangladeshi hospitality. “One shopkeeper walked over three kilometers just to ensure I reached my destination safely. That is the essence of Bangladesh: selflessness, warmth, and innocence,” he says.

Cricket, Culture, and Connection

Bangladesh’s cricket enthusiasm was another highlight of Shehan’s trip. Covering the BPL, he noticed a passion for cricket that mirrored Sri Lanka’s own fervor for the sport. Fans in both countries are intensely loyal, but the scale of excitement in Bangladesh, especially in local stadiums, was something Shehan described as “electric.”

Shehan also observed cultural nuances between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. While both countries share a love for cricket, food, and natural beauty, Bangladeshi cuisine surprised him with bold flavors and unique cooking techniques—like the use of soybean oil instead of coconut oil. His favorites included Desi Chicken, Borhani, Babar Khani, Mishti Doi, and Bhuna Khichuri.

The linguistic diversity, history of independence in 1971, and collective respect for cultural preservation left a profound impact on him.

“Bangladeshis have fought to protect their language and culture. That pride and unity, regardless of religion, is inspiring,” he notes.

ICC T20 World Cup 2026: On the Global Stage

Shehan’s expertise also led him to the global cricketing stage. As an official presenter for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, he brought his signature storytelling and charisma to an international audience, blending sports journalism with cultural insight.

Reflections on BPL and LPL

Having covered both the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) and the Lankam Premier League (LPL), Shehan found similarities and differences worth noting. While the LPL is compact and vibrant, the BPL demonstrates incredible fan engagement, grassroots enthusiasm, and a deep connection to the local culture. The love for cricket transcends borders, but each league has its unique flavor.

A Lasting Connection

Shehan Malik’s trip to Bangladesh was more than work, it was about people, friendship, culture, and love. From university campuses to quiet tea gardens, the stories he collected and the bonds he formed are lifelong treasures.

“Bangladesh gave me friendship, culture, history, and food that I will never forget. I will return soon, and I promise to keep sharing the stories of this incredible country,” Shehan concludes.
