Sri Lanka dominated the opening day of the second Test against the West Indies at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound, Antigua. Brilliant batting performances from opener Lahiru Udara and middle-order batter Kamindu Mendis guided the visitors to 338 for 5 at stumps on the first day.
After winning the toss, Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva elected to bat first. However, the tourists suffered an early setback as the West Indies pace attack struck quickly. Shamar Joseph dismissed Nishan Madushka for 6 with the team score on 15 before removing Dinesh Chandimal for just 1, leaving Sri Lanka struggling at 25 for 2.
Udara and Kamindu then rescued the innings with a magnificent 215-run partnership for the third wicket. The pair dominated the Caribbean bowlers, with Lahiru Udara producing a superb century. He eventually fell to Alzarri Joseph after a magnificent 188 off 248 balls, an innings featuring 21 fours and five sixes.
Kamindu Mendis also looked set for a century but was stumped off Justin Greaves after scoring an impressive 84 from 120 deliveries.
Sri Lanka suffered another blow late in the day when captain Dhananjaya de Silva was dismissed for 33 off 90 balls by Jayden Seales. However, Kusal Mendis (0*) and Sonal Dinusha (5*) remained unbeaten at the close of play.
For the West Indies, Shamar Joseph was the standout bowler, claiming 2 wickets for 60 runs from 15 overs. Jayden Seales, Alzarri Joseph, and Justin Greaves picked up one wicket each.
At stumps on Day One, Sri Lanka were well placed on 338 for 5 and will look to build on their strong position when play resumes on the second day.
