Former West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard has been appointed as the head coach of Mumbai Indians. He replaces former Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene, with whom the franchise parted ways earlier this month.
The 39-year-old Pollard has long been one of Mumbai Indians’ key pillars as a player. Expressing his excitement about taking on the new role as head coach, he said, “It is a great honour for me to take on the role of head coach of Mumbai Indians. This franchise has been a huge part of my life and career. The deep connection I share with the team, the players and the Mumbai fans means a great deal to me.”
As a player, Pollard represented only Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League from 2010 to 2022. During this period, he scored 3,412 runs and took 69 wickets in 189 matches. He was an integral member of the squad during all five of Mumbai Indians’ IPL title-winning campaigns in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. Following his retirement as a player, he has served as the franchise’s batting coach since 2023.
Mumbai Indians’ recent performances in the IPL have been inconsistent. Although they reached the playoffs in 2023 and 2025, they finished tenth and ninth in the 2024 and 2026 seasons, respectively.
Pollard’s first major challenge as the new head coach will be to finalise the franchise’s player retention list by November 15. The auction for the 2027 IPL season is expected to take place in Goa in December.
