Hazlewood ruled out of World Cup due to injury

Australia’s experienced fast bowler Josh Hazlewood will miss the upcoming T20 World Cup after failing to fully recover from injury. Cricket Australia has decided to withdraw him from the tournament as he is not yet match fit.

The 35-year-old pacer has not played any competitive cricket since mid-November. He had also missed the Ashes series against England due to hamstring and Achilles tendon injuries. Hazlewood was initially included in Australia’s 15-member World Cup squad in the hope that he could join the team midway through the tournament. However, based on the latest medical assessments, selectors no longer believe that scenario is realistic.

Cricket Australia selector Tony Dodemaide said that attempting to fast-track Hazlewood’s recovery would pose a significant risk. He explained that while there had been optimism about Hazlewood regaining match fitness before the Super Eight stage, it is now clear that he still needs more time.

Hazlewood’s absence has further increased pressure on Australia’s pace attack. Earlier, Test captain Pat Cummins was also ruled out of the World Cup with a back injury, having played just one match during the Ashes.

Although bowling all-rounder Sean Abbott has been added to the World Cup squad as a travelling reserve, Australia are not planning to name an official replacement at this stage. Dodemaide said the team is confident with its current resources for the opening matches and will make any decisions later based on necessity.

The T20 World Cup, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, begins this week. Australia will play their opening match against Ireland in Colombo on 11 February.
